If you were a sheep, you'd want to live here. We believe that all animals were created by God. He designed each one of them to fill a purpose and gave them the necessary and fascinating instincts to satisfy that purpose. Each creature was created with an intricate system…one that is easily thrown out of balance when the necessary foods or climate are not available. We do our best to ensure that the animals here at HHF live their lives happily and as close to their natural environment as is practical. We believe God created animals to live in symbiotic relationship with people and the environment, and that he gave us the responsibility to manage them with compassionate care as we benefit from and enjoy what they provide to us. We support them and they support us!
We like to keep things as natural and organic as possible here at HHF, but when all else fails we are grateful for the invention of modern medication and will take advantage of it if absolutely necessary in order to save life. Most “problems” are prevented by excellent management, but occasionally, things happen.
Agriculturally speaking... The health of our soil is one of the most important components of the farm. Healthy soil makes healthy fields makes healthy animals. In the spring/summer 2013 we put into action Joel Salatin’s model for grazing. This intensive rotational “salad bar” system allows the grass to be grazed by cattle and sheep for 1-2 days, followed by chickens when possible. The grazed portion is then allowed to rest until grown back at least 6 inches tall. This method accomplishes much for both grass and grazer. (1) It allows quick legume recovery and keeps animals from over-grazing and killing the best grasses. (2) Because most internal parasites are species-specific, grazing sheep with cattle breaks the cycle and reduces parasitic activity. (3) Chickens then follow behind and “pick through” the manure which eliminates flies, spreads the piles to fertilize, keeps the ground level, and ultimately nourishes the chicken! (Not to mention it reduces the feed bill.)
A clean, sustainable home The products we use in our households have a direct impact on our health and wellbeing. Much of what we use on the daily can be damaging to our health by causing cancers, allergies, and other disease. What we bring into our homes can be wasteful or sustainable, helpful or hurtful. We are doing our best to educate ourselves and become better stewards of our gifts and abilities as we nurture the ag lands we are caring for.
As a small business and farm, we are working hard to get products for a healthier home and planet out to consumers quickly and affordably. Every dollar that you spend on our products goes directly back into our farm and is dispersed between local small businesses and ministries. So, how do we at HHF actively protect the environment and ourselves? We DO NOT:
Package products in plastic or buy one-time-use plastic items
Use any synthetic harmful ingredients in our products
Use or produce any home products that we are aware of that will negatively impact the environment and our bodies
We DO:
Use ingredients that are sustainably sourced and renewable (No Palm)
Invest all that we have back into the ground by intensive rotational grazing, producing and feeding our own hay, education, managing and maintaining multiple farms for future generations.
Treat our livestock with love and respect until the end of their happy healthy lives.
